Error: '-2147221164' when installing, upgrading or uninstalling GFI Archiver ( ONLY)

Answer

PROBLEM

Installation / upgrade / uninstall of GFI Archiver fails and the process is rolling back. The installation log (%temp%\marc*.log) lists the following error right before the rollback is triggered:
 
InstallShield 15:39:55: CreateAppPoolFunction 
InstallShield 15:39:55: m_spAppHostAdminManager NULL, CoCreateInstance returned: -2147221164 
InstallShield 15:39:55: Exception caught in CreateAppPool function 
InstallShield 15:39:55: Error with IISRT: -2116

ENVIRONMENT

  • GFI Archiver
  • All supported environments

SOLUTION

After confirming this situation consult with a Product Specialist in regard of the solution below. Development might need to be involved to create such a modified installer, as this is not generally available.
  1. The installer package must be modified to bypass the CreateAppPoolFunction
  2. Perform the installation / upgrade / uninstall
  3. Manually create the application pools / web applications in IIS

CAUSE

Windows DLL files are corrupted, which are required for the installer code which handles the application pools in IIS.
