Overview
This article will discuss installing the Archive Assistant tool using the MSI packages via Group Policy Objects (GPO)
Prerequisites
- Manual Archiving must be enabled for the tool to be used
- Outlook must be installed on the client devices
- Active Directory enabled environment
- This method of installation is available to network administrators only.
Solution
Follow the steps below to configure the GPO, ADM, and Configuration of the tool to install across the selected portion of the network.
Preparing the Software for Install
- Download the following Archive Assistant MSI package from MSI Download Links for GFI Archiver Client Access Tools making sure to match the version of the software installed:
mar_archiveassistant.msi
- Save the downloaded file to a shared folder on your network, accessible by all domains.
- Locate the downloaded file. Take note of the folder path for later use.
- Click Start > Administrative Tools > Group Policy Management.
- Expand Forest > Domains > domain name. Right-click the domain name and select Create a GPO in this domain, and Link it here...
- Enter a name for the new Group Policy Object (GPO). For example: Archive Assistant. Click OK.
- Right-click the newly created Linked GPO and click Edit.
- In the Group Policy Management Editor window, expand User Configuration > Policies > Software settings > Software Installation. Right click Software Installation > New > Package to configure the GPO to install on log in.
- Enter the network path of the shared folder that contains the Archive Assistant MSI package. Click OK.
NOTE
When selecting the location of the msi file ensure that this is done through ‘My network locations’ so that the share name in GFI Archiver includes the full network share location rather than the local path.
- In the Deploy Software pop-up, select Assigned and click OK.
- The new package is now added under Software Installation.
Configure the ADM File
Use an Administrative Template file (ADM) to set up and manage the required registry settings for the GFI Archiver Addon to communicate with GFI Archiver server.
To add an ADM template:
- Click Start > Administrative Tools > Group Policy Management.
- Expand Forest > Domains > domain name. Right-click Archive Assistant and select Edit
- In the Group Policy Management Editor window, expand User Configuration > Policies > Software settings > Software Installation.
- Double-click the package to open the properties window.
- In the Deployment tab, select Install this application at logon.
- Click Apply and OK to close the window.
- In the Group Policy Management window expand Forest > Domains > domain name > Archive Assistant
- In the Security Filtering Pane, click Add.
- In Select User, Computer or Group add Domain Users and click OK.
- In Group Policy Management, expand Forest > Domains > Group Policy Objects. Right click Archive Assistant and click Edit.
- In the Group Policy Management Editor, expand Archive Assistant > User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates.
- Right-click Administrative Templates and select Add/Remove Templates.
- Click Add. Open the GFI Archiver installation folder (default path C:\Program Files\GFI\Archiver) and open the Client Tools folder.
- Locate
gfiapps.adm
and click Open to add the template. Click Close.
Configure the Archiver Server Location
This section provides the setting for the Archive Assistant application to connect to after installation.
- In the Group Policy Management Editor, expand File Archive Assistant > User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Classic Administrative Templates (ADM) > GFI Applications.
- Double click GFI Archiver Server Location.
- Select the Enabled radio-button.
- In the Server URL field, type the GFI Archiver URL (for example:
https://192.168.7.125/Archiver
. Click Apply and OK to close the window. - The set up should now be complete. Archive Assistant will be installed the Next time each client machine is started.
Testing
The Archive Assistant adds buttons for manual archiving to toolbars, ribbons, and/or menus within Microsoft Outlook. To verify successful installation, check that Archive buttons are now visible within Microsoft Outlook.
