Overview

Emails in the archive show up blank and with a winmail.dat attachment.

Environment

• GFI Archiver
• Mixed Microsoft Exchange versions (for example 2003 and 2007)

Root Cause

Journaling is not configured in a supported way, Microsoft Exchange wise.

Resolution

This is a known issue when using mixed Microsoft Exchange environments. To resolve this, please ensure that the journal mailbox is located on the correct location.

For example, if running Microsoft Exchange 2003 and 2007, the Microsoft Exchange 2003 server should journal to a mailbox hosted on Microsoft Exchange 2003. For further details, please read:

Emails which have already been archived cannot be changed. They will always remain in the archive with a winmail.dat attachment, as that is how they were archived. If the information from one of these archived emails with a winmail.dat attachment is needed, you can try to open them with a third-party tool which can be found via the internet.
