Answer
By design, GFI Archiver does not remove items from Microsoft Exchange user mailboxes after they have been imported into a database when:
- archiving items via a journal mailbox
- importing items via the Import Export Tool (IET)
Note that the Archive Assistant has the ability to delete items which have been archived.
Removing items from Microsoft Exchange mailboxes can be achieved using a Microsoft Exchange retention policy. Such a policy will automatically remove items in a Microsoft Exchange mailbox after a certain period of time. Instructions on how to setup a Microsoft Exchange retention policy can be found in the following Microsoft links:

Notes
- When importing items from Microsoft Exchange mailboxes into GFI Archiver via the Import Export Tool (IET) and using Microsoft Exchange retention polices it is recommended to use the following Advanced Options within the Import Export Tool (IET) to avoid that the tool writes a flag to items it processes as this causes the items' time stamp to change against which the Microsoft Exchange policies run:
- Import Export Tool (IET)
- Import from Microsoft Exchange mailbox
- On the dialog named Import Options (last page of the wizard), click on Advanced Options
- Ensure that the following two options are enabled (ticked):
- Do not mark processed emails
- Clear email flag prior processing
